The full congregation recites the communion prayer in our service book. I can understand everyone saying the first part to "Amen." If a person is not taking communion, why do we continue the prayer after this "Amen?" The words that follow do not seem to support their inaction in not receiving communion. Please explain.

It has become a practice within our archdiocese to have the congregation recite this prayer aloud. I agree that the prayer makes little or no sense to the person in the congregation who is not prepared to receive Holy Communion. In fact and in reality, it makes no sense to attend an entire Divine Liturgy, whose sole purpose is the preparation for communion with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and then choose not receive His precious Body and Blood.

The choice is plainly simple. Either, everyone in attendance should be prepared to receive Holy Communion and recite the prayer, or only those prepared should recite the prayer, while all others remain silent.
