I'm
a teenager. I know very little about my background and heritage, only what I had
to learn for school. My Grandfather is from Aitha and he is really the only one who knows much about our background. I'm not too
comfortable asking him about the background and language. Is there any way the
church could do something like classes?
I'm
rather curious about my background and heritage. I don't have many people who
know about it. For example, I would like to learn Arabic. Is there any class to
explain things like this?
It's
too bad that you don't feel comfortable talking to your grandfather about your
history and heritage. There's nothing like first-hand information about a
family background. You can only learn so much from textbooks.
Is
there a language barrier talking to your grandfather? Does he speak English well
enough to explain? Why not consider taking another family member or friend who
is fluent in Arabic and English to help obtain the stories?
If
none of these alternatives is viable and providing the interest is there, we
have many competent members in our parish who could teach the general history of
Lebanon and Syria as well as the Arabic language. It's just a matter of making
it available. Any volunteers?
