Why does our Church calendar begin on September 1?
The
Orthodox liturgical year begins on September 1 and ends on August 31.
This was the cycle of the calendar of the
Byzantine Empire
, and September 1 is called the Indiction which is effectively “New Year’s
Day” in the Orthodox Church. I
suspect that the Jewish calendar, which is based on the lunar cycle and begins
in September, influenced the Byzantines.
